Picture frame back - Vicky's way!

You will need :-

Brass U channel
2 pieces brass tube hinge about 2" each
1 length hinge inner
The means to cut the channel - mitres (lil' notcher or fine hacksaw)
A square of some sort
Ruler or tape measure
Felt marker
Stiff felt or nice card to hold the picture in place
Basic bench tools including soldering iron
Your glass frame - ready to finish!

The frame you are going to make needs to be surround the clear opening and will be fitted at the back. It needs to throw the least shadow possible on to the glass.

So measure the opening and add 1/4" to both the vertical & horizontal measurements!

Cut the channel with a 45deg mitre.

Don't forget you only need
3 sides - the top of the
assembly is left open!

Use the square to make sure the sides are perpendicular to the top and lock it all in place as below or just with pins if you haven't got the posh layout system!

Then solder the mitred corners. A good trick here is to use a clothes peg to keep the solder out of the channel!

Solder the assembled channel on the back of the frame with the open side facing towards the top edge.

Mount the larger (outer) tube sections on the upper part of the channel. Make sure they are level
with each other.

You can can block the open
tube ends with something to
keep the solder out!

Measure like this (above) and

bend it like so (Right!)

Cut a piece of stiff felt or nicely coloured
card so it just fits into the channel frame.
Mount the picture by sliding it into
the frame with the card behind it.

Nearly there!

Fit the bent wire/tube in place from below!

You're done!

The finished article!

Well done Vicky! Looks good!

Thanks!
